Staple! and Joanne Foxtrot

Staple! and Joanne Foxtrot

Staple! is one of my favorite comic-cons to attend. It’s local (a quick hop to Austin) and it’s always packed with awesome indie creators and fan willing to try new things. Plus it actually focuses on comics, and not the mass entertainment/movie/video game tie-ins that so many are in the business for these days. The entire Space-Gun crew will be in ustin this March for the

Fellow Space-Gunner Paul Milligan an I decided to do a  short for inclusion in this years Staple! program book. It’s based on a rough concept by Jake Ekiss (another studio member) that proposed a series of shorts about the future’s hottest, toughest, space-fighting women. Think 50’s pinups and bomber art meet pulp adventure and futuristic sci-fi.  So everything I love about comics and sci-fi basically.

Words and inks by me, with sweet-ass pencils by Paul.

These pages are unlettered, so be sure and come down to Staple! and pick up the program book if you want to get your introduction to our new heroine Joanne Foxtrot. They’ll be plenty more of her to come as 2011 rolls along.

Staple! is March 5th and 6th at the Marchesa Hall and Theater in Austin, TX. Go here for more info.

Influence Map

Influence Map

This meme went around last year and as always I managed to finish mine but never got around to posting it.

Favorite artists of mine shown here include Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, While Portacio, Jim Lee, Sam Keith (all early 90’s favorites), Jack ‘The King’ Kirby, Erik Larsen, Mike Mignola, Wayne Barlow, Ben Templesmith & Scott McCloud. The Aliens franchise and sci-fi in general are a big influence, as are painters like Pollock and Dali, along with a ton of interactive design stuff I didn’t have room to include.

And only a few months late, I’m posting like it’s 2010!

Star Trek Fan Days

Star Trek Fan Days

I’m attending my first ever Star Trek Fan Days convention October 23rd & 24th and I’ll be offering my first ever limited-run giclée print to celebrate the occasion.

Spock: Past and Present, limited edition 13×19 giclée

Spock: Past and Present will be limited to 30 prints, available exclusively at the Fan Days convention. They will be on sale for $20 each and are printed with high definition inks on 13×19 archival quality Epson photo paper.

I’ve always been a huge sci-fi fan and Star Trek: The Next Generation really had an impact on me as a kid. TOS is pretty classic, but I identified more with the slow, cerebral aspects of the TNG series.

The newest movie was a great action piece, but still a little lacking in the sci-fi department for my tastes, though Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy stole the show.

Star Trek Fan Days is October 23rd and 24th and the Plano Center. Hours are Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 11am-4pm.

Dallas Comic Con & Senryu Online

Dallas Comic Con & Senryu Online

Sorry for the short notice, but thanks to the generosity of my Space-Gun Studios brother-in-arm Evan I’ll be setup tomorrow for the second day of Dallas Comic Con.

I’ll have prints and copies of Senryu for sale, and will be doing sketches and headshots on the cheap, so come on out. Mention this blog and I’ll give you a free head sketch!

Also, starting September 1st I’ll be posting the complete Senryu online. After learning the ins and outs of ComicPress I’ll be offering it up as a webcomic starting next month.

It’ll run from Sept. 1st until October 7th, so add it to your RSS reader of choice now!

Staple! 2010

Staple! 2010

I’ll be in Austin this weekend to attend the 6th annual Staple! Independent Media Expo.

STAPLE!

I’ll be out with the entire Space-Gun Crew (Jake Ekiss, Evan Bryce, Paul Milligan and Vinh-Luan Luu) hawking prints, sketches and copies of Senryu.

Staple! is a blast and my favorite con of the season to attend, so if you’re in Austin come out and have a look around, you’ll find some of the best independent comics America has to offer.

And for up -to-the-minute news on the day be sure and follow my twitter feed.

Dallas Comic Con, Day Two

Dallas Comic Con, Day Two

Day two of DCC was pretty awesome. The lines weren’t nearly as bad but business was jsut as good as day one, with most of that business being in the form of sketches.

This cool kid asked me to do a female Iron Man sketch and I tried to rock it out as best as I could.

Got a nice Two-Face request as well.

Plus a rare appearance by King Bender.

Deadman. Who is dead.

Plus a little Predator action.

And to top it all off the little lady got to meet one of her most favorite actors, Sean Patrick Flanery. Priority pass line-cutting FTW!

All in all it was another very positive convention experience (except for the con-contagion Beth and I came down with Sunday night). Senryu didn’t do quite as well as I had hoped, but I made plenty of profit doing sketches and selling prints, so it was a win. Hopefully Staple will treat the book a bit better come March 6th.

Ciao!
